The finest of Wood For a wooden door frame… and Why

February 4th, 2022 | Select Category

Several questions run behind your mind when you have to choose a door frame. You have to consider a number of factors like material, colour, structure, cost and lastly the location , interior or exterior.

In this article, we will discuss the different kinds of woods which would be suitable for your door frame.

In my personal research, I feel hardwoods are the best choice for outdoors as they withstand all weather conditions and are low maintenance. For example, if you can afford it, white oak, mahogany or teak is the best to be used. For indoor doors, the best material used for door frames is pine and maple, which also belong to the hardwood family but are less dense.

External door frames

We need to select the right external door frame keeping in mind two factors, namely strength and aesthetics. It should be strong enough to protect your house in case of robbery or theft. The external door frame should also match the door design you have fondly selected. The entrance door is an emotion for most of us in India, and we occasionally do offer our prayers at the door step. Considering these criteria’s, hardwood is the best choice. Hardwood door frames always look good.

  • Mahogany has a distinctive red colour which not only makes it look beautiful but durable too. It has an admirable strength and the wood resists rot naturally.
  • Teak is a light gray-brown hardwood widely used in India. It contains natural oils to fight against pest and withstand weather conditions. Teak is the best choice as it looks beautiful as it ages without any maintenance.

Internal door frames.

Internal door frames don’t need to be as strong as the external door frames as they need not put up with the weather conditions. Hence, the primary consideration while selecting an internal door frame is reasonable strength with good aesthetics. This is the reason why the builders use softwood for the internal door frames.

1)Pinewood is the most widely used door frame as it is easy to work with and reasonably priced.

2) Maple wood is the second option, as it is equally strong and beautiful in comparison with pine wood.

3) Well, we all know oak wood is a good wood too, but the main reason we do not use it for door frames is that it is a little harder to work with. Nowadays MDF ( Medium Density Wood) is used for internal door frames, but it is not a solid wood making it the last option to be considered.

Conclusion

No matter what is your choice, make sure that you inspect your door frames and door properly before installation. Now, you know what to look for when you are building your next-door frame. Choose right and let it last long.
